PSP Grand Knights History English Patch Alpha

Sunday, May 18, 2014
"About the Patch:
This patch is a nearly complete English patch for Grand Knights History. There are patches floating around by Gyoru and by kenma9123, but they were partial patches. This patch is practically completely English. I use "practically" because there are images that still have Japanese in them, but I have yet to find them in-game, so they have not been translated. All the text is done, as are most of the images.

This patch was tested only by a close friend (not myself), and changes were made to the patch as mistakes were found, so I'm looking for people to help test from scratch and review. There are three "branching" story lines, and my tester only went through one. While a good majority of the text is shared in all three branches, there are still differences that could be missed.

I will be going through the game eventually, but I'd currently rather spend my time doing other things.

There may be text overruns in some cases, but most of that should be fixed.

About the Project (Help):
This project was started after XSEED announced that GKH was cancelled. Even though GKH is a game meant to be played online and the servers are closed, I'm a fan of Vanillaware and think their games are beautiful, so I decided to finish what others started. A single player mode exists, so there's some content to be enjoyed.

There are still things that need to be done to finalize this project (in my eyes):
  • Alpha testing and proof reading
  • Finding the variable-width text drawing routine
I'm looking for people who will be able to play through the game with the patch and test the patch on different platforms. You'll need custom firmware, and the patch has only been tested on PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 models with PRO-CFW 6.60.

I'm also looking for people who are more skilled in hacking than I am to help find a text drawing routine. It looks like there are two text drawing routines to me, as evident from the item list in the game. One routine squeezes the text, whereas the other does not. There are some places where I'd like to use the squeezed text routine rather than the plain routine so that text doesn't run into other things. I've spent some time trying to figure this out, but ultimately decided that I didn't know what I was looking for.

Anyone willing to help with either, please contact me. I'll also visit this thread occasionally. There's no hosting for this project other than this thread. Any help regarding that aspect will be appreciated as well.

Patch Download:
For anyone who wants to test the patch, download here

You'll need custom firmwarexdelta, and UMDGen. Read the README in the zipped patch file for instructions.

Known Issues:
There are a few known issues that have yet to be resolved.

1. Text overrun in some menus
[IMG]

2. Weapon selection text in character creation
[IMG]

3. Text overrun in cut in images
[IMG]

4. Quotes overextend
[IMG]

Notes:
- Keep in mind that it's a still Japanese game, so "O" is confirm and "X" is cancel
- The online portion of the game, while translated, has not been tested at all, nor is it a goal to complete this portion of the game. If there are easy fixes to be done, they will be completed for the final version, but otherwise, it's low priority

What the PRX Patch Does:

The plugin is only needed if playing on a PSP. It hooks the utility functions to change the region to English. If using an emulator, the plugin isn't needed.
  • Hook internal PSP functions to change region (OSK, Save, Screenshot)
Last Words:
This was a personal project that was meant to allow me and close friends play the game. I wasn't planning on making it public, but I decided that since the most of the work would be done, I'd release it. As such, I won't really be maintaining the project closely (publicly, at least). I plan to release a final version after the alpha, and that would be it.

Big thanks to:
Gyoru, for starting the patch and suggesting that a complete patch could be done
kenma9123, for helping me get starting by sharing his extractor tool
codestation, for open-sourcing his PRX patch code, from which I was able to study and learn from
My translator and tester, both of which who wish to remain anonymous (shy people...)

Support Vanillaware! The art in their games is amazing and deserves to be recognized."

PSP Custom Firmwares 6.20 ME-1.9 and 6.20 LME-1.9 (with perma patch) are now available!

Monday, May 12, 2014
"
2 days ago we blogged about the new permanent patch for the 6.20 LME CFW, and that it is currently in development.
We showed you a beta version of said permanent patch, and are proud to announce that it is now available for public!

RELEASE: CUSTOM FIRMWARES 6.20 ME-1.9 AND 6.20 LME-1.9

An overview about all the different PSP motherboards
PSP motherboard overview
If we take a closer look at the PSP motherboard overview, we can see that nearly every PSP model is able to run the 6.20 official firmware, or is old enough to run a custom IPL CFW.
The only not supported devices are the PSP 3000 (07g) and the PSP E1000, due to not being able to run the official firmware 6.20.
Despite actually not supporting the firmware 6.20, the PSP 3000s (09g) are able to forcefully downgrade to firmware 6.20, thanks to the Chronoswitch v5 downgrader. The other PSPs natively support the official firmware 6.20.
If you are already running the ME custom firmware, then there is no need to downgrade to the 6.20 ME-1.9, since it offers no upsides compared to the 6.60 ME CFW.
If you are already running the LME custom firmware, then you might want to downgrade to the firmware 6.20, and install a permanently patched 6.20 LME-1.9 custom firmware, since this will enable you to automatically boot into your LME CFW.
Furthermore it enables you to fix semi-bricks, thanks to the recovery menu access on startup.
The revision update 1.9 for the 6.20 ME and 6.20 LME custom firmwares fixes a few bugs that were introduced due to porting the CFWs to the firmware 6.20.
Those bugs are not present in the lastest version of the 6.39/6.60 L/ME CFWs.

A bunch of VHBL “proof of concept” ports surface for the latest vita firmware

Friday, May 2, 2014
"We’ve been a bit quiet on the hacking front recently, but that’s not the case of hackers who have been hard at work to port our beloved VHBL to more exploits. Although VHBL does not offer the same level of functionality as TN-V, it is still a great tool for those of you who want to run homebrews (in particular emulators) on your PS Vita.
What is VHBL?
VHBL (a.k.a. Vita Half Byte Loader) is a homebrew loader for the Playstation Vita, running within the vita’s PSP emulator. It lets you run PSP homebrews and emulators on your PS Vita (check here for a list of emulators you can run on your Vita). In order to achieve that, VHBL requires an exploit in an official PSP game: people who want to install VHBL need to buy a legit license of the exploited game from the PSN Store, and typically install a crafted savedata for that specific game. The crafted savedata tricks the game/vita into running unsigned content, in other words, homebrews and emulators.
We’ve done dozens of VHBL releases on this site in the past, and the pattern is always the same: people who want to get VHBL on their Vita need to act fast, as usually within hours of announcing the exploitable game on this site, Sony takes the game down from their store, until they can announce a new version of the firmware that patches the vulnerability, at which point they usually put the game back on the store.
Long story short, VHBL is a cool piece of software for your Vita, but releasing it is kind of a pain, and there is no saying if all these VHBL ports floating around will ever be released. Nevertheless, here are the ones I’ve spotted so far:
Famous Japanese hacker 173210 is showing a proof of concept on ABCanG1015′s exploit. The picture shows it running on a PSP, but that’s usually the first step before a full port to the Vita:

This video by Wistine showcases VHBL running on firmware 3.12. Wistine has confirmed to me that it still runs on firmware 3.15:

The Z also revealed popular Menu 138 running on VHBL, with a selection of Homebrews, running on a vita firmware 3.15, in the following tweet:

vhbl_vita_315
So that’s 3 so far, and I’m sure more are in the wild. If you’re on firmware 3.15 and hope for homebrew to come to you, I’m convinced it’s going to happen soon." -wololo
