Rumor: Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC map names leaked. New weapons included in DLC Map Pack

Monday, November 18, 2013
According to reports from gamers at DenkirsonCall of Duty: Ghosts will feature new multiplayer maps on its first DLC Pack. These users discovered a number of unknown map names (currently not included in the base game) appearing in the multiplayer’s Moshpit playlist.
These are the map names that appeared in the play list:
  • Boneyard
  • Dome
  • LUA_MENU_GAZA
  • Red River
  • Swamp
  • Rumble

It seems that “Dome“, a very popular map from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 would return, as well as “Boneyard”, an area featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Furthermore, another user appears to have discovered that Call of Duty: Ghosts could feature new DLC weapons. @syncohboyy found a few lines where we can see something named “ch_dlcweap” and “purchase”

The “purchase” part might indicate that these items are part of the DLC map packs and must be bought, but they could also be micro-payment items, similar to some ones in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
As always, take this with a grain of salt, Activision or Infinity Ward have yet to make any official announcements regarding Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC.

PS4 'Blue Light of Death' Has No Clear Fix Yet

PS4 'Blue Light of Death' Has No Clear Fix Yet
A number of PlayStation 4 owners appear to have non-functional units that all suffer the same problem, a so-called blue light—or blue pulse—of death. We can't tell how many and assume it's a small but noteworthy minority. P
The problem is being cited in scathing Amazon reviews, a trickle of Twitter complaints and a stack of videos on YouTube—as well as in more than a dozen e-mails and Tweets received byKotaku since the console's launch on Friday. P
Sony hasn't offered any official comment to Kotaku on the matter, but a representative on the official PS4 support forums did post a lengthy set of step-by-step troubleshooting tips today. That post, on a thread entitled "[INFO] Blinking Blue Light PS4 Issues," doesn't offer any surefire fix. P
From what I've heard, those with this issue have found that the best solution still involves sending the unit back—either directly to Sony or to the retailer who sold it to them, if an exchange is available.P
The problem that these PS4 users are facing is frustratingly simple. When a PS4 is working and is turned on with a press of the power button, the light that runs along the side of the console should first pulse blue and then switch to white. As it does, the console should send a signal to the TV it is hooked up to. Those who have the "blue light/pulse of death" are instead finding that their PS4 pulses blue, never goes to white and never sends a signal to their TV. I first heard about this problem on Wednesday from a Redditor going by the name Arogon. He'd won his PS4 in a Taco Bell contest and received it prior to launch.P
You can see many examples of the blue light of death on YouTube. This one, for example:P
...and this one...P
...and this one...P
We've presented another one in the GIF atop this post. P
Sony's troubleshooting tips involve holding down the power button for seven seconds, unplugging the console and then powering it back on. The company also recommends checking the seating of the hard drive and ensuring that the firmware of the connected TV is up to date.
While I've heard from numerous people who've had the pulsing blue light problem, I've not heard from any who have been able to fix it through any simple steps.
I have, however, heard from multiple PS4 users whose systems did have problems that they could fix—those users, like us, had PS4s that had lights that went from blue to white. The scattered issues involved things like bent metal in an HDMI port and incompatibility with some non-Sony HDMI cables. The issues vary widely, as do the solutions. Screenwriter and former PC Gamer editor Gary Whitta got his blue-to-white machine working only once he added the PS4's day-one patch via a USB stick. Whitta's emotional rollercoaster was captured on Twitter, where he went from "OH SHIT UPS TRUCK" to "HAHAHAHAHAHAHA my PS4 doesn't work" to "Guys, I got it working! I'm a tech genius!" in about two hours.P
The blue-light-only people are posting much angrier accounts.P
The console's Amazon rating—with its more than 600 five-star reviews—has been dragged down by nearly 400 one-star reviews, many of which cite the blue light problem. A sampling:P
PS4 'Blue Light of Death' Has No Clear Fix YetSEXPAND
Several people have contacted me directly after seeing my article about our own formerly-broken PS4. Our problem was simple and unrelated to the blue light thing, but I nevertheless asked for anyone who was having trouble to reach out. They did. They've mostly been frustrated by the problem, though one has said that Sony is already sending him a box for him to return his console in. And another shared an emotional rollercoaster of an adventure with me that involved first rescuing his PS4 from being delivered on a neighbor's doorstep and then, after discovering the console had the blue-light problem, rushing to a retailer that exchanged it for a working one.P
On Twitter, one frustrated PS4 owner, a musician named John Beauchamp, Tweeted to mesaying he was "currently stuck on blue." A day later, he Tweeted: P
"After a two hour wait, a 10 minute phone conversation mostly involving address and ticket # exchange, Sony is sending me a box to ship... my DOA PS4 and they're going to ship me a brand new PS4 in return... The customer service rep I talked to was extremely reassuring, confident, and knowledgeable which was extremely nice... Also I should remind everyone with DOA's that the customer service rep on the other end is a person to who is not the cause of your problem... Well most of them aren't at least. There's always that 1%"P
One of the more unexpected notes Kotaku got regarding the blue light problems was from adult film actress Alana Evans, whose NSFW Twitter feed provided yet another chronicle of the emotional journey of "blue light of death" PS4 users. Early on launch day, she tweeted "Merry Christmas to me ;)" and this picture:P
PS4 'Blue Light of Death' Has No Clear Fix YetSEXPAND
Ninety minutes later she was tweeting: "wow! Hey @Kotaku@PlayStation My PS4 DOESN'T WORK!!!!! IT ONLY GIVES ME A BLUE LIGHT AND WONT POWER UP. I AM NOT HAPPY!" She said she checked the HDMI port. There was no bent metal. She had the blue light of death problem. P
And then, the next day: "I have now been on hold another 50 mins for my third attempt at calling @Playstation. They could at least give me phone sex while I wait." Later she said that she expected to be getting a new one on Tuesday, four days after her console failed on her. She then Tweeted: "I'm not assuming anything. I WILL NOT be getting the Xbox 1 on launch. Not going thru this again."P
Some people might conclude that these are the hazards of buying a console at launch. Some machines do break. Sony even told reporters prior to launch that .4% of units that had been distributed to that point had issues—that's 4 out of 1000, or 1 out of 250. That ratio may have changed. It may not have. We're only going to be hearing complaints from those whose machines failed, of course, and most of the people whose PS4s are working are unlikely to drop me a e-mails or send Tweets. Kotaku's far-flung team now have about six or so PS4s, all of which boot up just fine. We've enjoyed many games on the machine and think pretty highly of the unit and its new services. (Read our PS4 review.)P
Nevertheless, the reason this issue is being referred to as a "blue light of death" is because people remember Microsoft's "red ring of death" on the Xbox 360. That hardware problem killed so many original Xbox 360s, that Microsoft eventually had to extend the warranty on the machine for three year. The fiasco cost the company an estimated $1 billionP
There is no indication that this PS4 issue is that bad, but we'll keep an eye on it and will let you know whatever important new details we learn.

The Last of Us Story DLC Is A Prequel Featuring Ellie

Friday, November 15, 2013

Today at Sony's PS4 event Naughty Dog revealed Left Behind, the first story-based DLC for The Last of Us. The teaser trailer showed Ellie along with Riley Abel, her friend from back during her school days in the Quarantine Zone.P
Those who have read the Dark Horse comic run of The Last of Us: American Dreams, co-written by TLOU writer Neil Druckmann and artist Faith Erin Hicks, will be familiar with Riley. She was Ellie's friend back when Ellie was in school in the quarantine zone. In the game, Ellie explains to Joel what happened to the two of them, the comics only show the two of them meeting and becoming friends.1P
If you've read the comics (which are great, and you really should) and played the game, you'll agree that this DLC will probably involve… emotions.P
Sony has shared a bunch more information about the DLC, which will release in early 2014 for $14.99.P
The Last of Us: Left Behind is Naughty Dog's first ever single-player DLC. Bruce, Neil, and the rest of the team are getting close to wrapping work on this new campaign, which will meet the quality and gameplay what you've come to expect with The Last of Us, along with a few surprises.
She's back! Ashley Johnson reprises her role as Ellie in The Last of Us: Left Behind single-player DLC. Left Behind takes place while Ellie is attending a military boarding school in the Boston quarantine zone, prior to meeting Joel and the events in the main campaign of The Last of Us.
In just a few short months since the release of The Last of Us, you have made it clear that Ellie has become one of your favorite characters in games. Today, we're excited to confirm that you play as Ellie throughout the entirety of Left Behind.
Joining Ellie on this new adventure is Riley, her best friend and also a mentor of sorts at the military boarding school. Just as The Last of Us focused on the bond between Ellie and Joel, Left Behind explores the bond between Ellie and Riley through a series of events that will forever change both of their lives.
Bringing Riley to life through our performance capture process is the talented Yaani King, who we had the pleasure of working with on the DLC.
If you just can't wait until the DLC drops to get more of The Last of Us, go out immediately and read the Dark Horse comic series, The Last of Us: American Dreams – which is conveniently available in the recently released paperback collection. I cannot recommend this series enough and it's even more relevant now, as in the comic you will learn more about how Ellie and Riley first became friends, giving you even more insight into Ellie's story in The Last of Us universe. And it's also just plain great!
The Last of Us: Left Behind will be releasing in early 2014 – we will announce a specific date as soon as we iron out all the details. The awesome news is that Left Behind is included in the The Last of Us Season Pass, which also includes a ton of multiplayer DLC, and is the best deal you can get for all the DLC content we've planned to release – over 75% worth of savings compared to buying all the DLC separately. If you're only interested in the single-player DLC, you can pre-order it starting November 19 on the PlayStation Store for $14.99.

PS4 Remote Play, Put To The Test

Thursday, November 14, 2013
The PlayStation 4's Remote Play functionality might be one of the system's coolest features, at least in theory: the idea of being able to switch between the big screen and the Vita for just about any game is undeniably appealing to a ton of people—especially the ones who share their televisions with loved ones or other nuisances.P
The good news is this: when Remote Play works, it works well. You can play tons of PS4 games on your Vita smoothly and without interruption, and they look pretty damn good on the Vita's small screen.P
The bad news is that after extensive testing over the past two days, I've found that, in its current state, Remote Play is inconsistent. It won't work at all on our office Internet, it's laggy and choppy on Stephen's slow Brooklyn connection, and even on my home network, which is rather fast, I can't move very far from my television without losing connection.P
Let's start with the good: sitting in my living room, six or seven feet away from my television, I was able to play through games like Assassin's Creed IV and Battlefield 4 on my Vita without an issue. The Vita will mirror whatever is on the screen, and players can use the Vita as either their main screen, their controller, or both. P
Here's what it looks like in my apartment:P
PS4 Remote Play, Put To The Test
Sometimes, during my tests, there was a slight delay between what was on the television and what was on the Vita, but it wasn't significant. Fractions of seconds. For a game like Madden, though, that could be annoying—try to imagine hearing announcers talking on your TV and then on your Vita just a tiny bit later, and you'll get what I'm saying. (Muting one machine solves that problem pretty easily.)P
Another small annoyance: since the Vita doesn't have two back triggers, different games use different button configurations to account for that. Some of those configurations require the back touchpad of the Vita, which is very easy to accidentally bump and touch. (Especially if you're not wearing pants, and you decide to rest the Vita on your knee like you might with a controller.)P
Those niggles aside, games ran smoothly for me—at least within a short radius. When testing the system in different parts of my apartment, I found that games would occasionally lag at the 15-20-feet range, and shut off entirely after 20 feet or so. Here's what happened when I tried to take a Madden session from my living room to my bathroom, about 25 feet away from my PS4.P
PS4 Remote Play, Put To The Test
Next-gen pixels! (A few seconds later, it disconnected.)P
In case you're wondering, my home connection speed, according to the PS4's connection test, downloads at 15.1 megabytes per second and uploads at 1.0 megabytes per second.P
In the office, we couldn't get Remote Play working at all, but you might chalk that up to Internet issues involving our office firewall: we're still looking into what happened there.P
Sony recommends that you keep your Vita and PS4 on the same WiFi network for optimal use, but just for kicks, I also tested with other Kotaku staffers to see if we could get this thing working with different WiFi networks. Could Patricia use her Vita from San Francisco to control my PS4 in NYC? Nope. Could I use my Vita from uptown Manhattan to control Evan's PS4 downtown? Nope. Other permutations were equally unsuccessful.P
So here's the verdict: right out of the box, Remote Play works well if you want to sit in the living room, playing PS4 games on a portable screen. Try to move much further, though, and you might have problems. At least for now.

Broken PlayStation 4 Systems: Well, so far so good…

Thursday, November 14, 2013
Though the PlayStation 4 won’t be released in North America until Friday, some users who have obtained early access to the systems are reporting broken displays. An IGN retail PS4 stopped outputting through the HDMI after the user began downloading Netflix. Kotaku’s first retail system also reportedly had a faulty HDMI jack that would not output a signal. Two other users on NeoGAF, who obtained early access to their consoles via a Taco Bell promotion, also reported similar problems with HDMI outputs. Based on reports from at least one user, Sony has been responsive to warranty claims and is shipping a replacement unit. As is the case for all PlayStation hardware, the PS4 is covered by warranty for twelve months.
It’s not unusual for the early runs of console hardware to experience trouble. There are nearly limitless relationships between hardware, software, and user behavior. While many of the incompatibilities can be cleared up during testing, the scale of interactions when the console goes public is bound to reveal numerous otherwise unpredictable problems.
IGN has reached out to Sony for comment but has not yet heard back. Users who are experiencing trouble are encouraged to contact Sony support 1-800-345-SONY.
